Black Butterflies - Maria the Obsidian Butterfly Maiden (Spoilers) - Lobsel_Vith - 03-31-2024 Spoilers for SH2 lurk here. There's been alot of questions about the black butterflies in the end of Silent Hill 2, and this is what I found out. According to the Native people of Aztec there was a goddess known as Itzpapalotl. According to the myth she's a beautiful/desirable looking woman, but that one should be careful because once embraced she will turn into the Obsidian Butterfly Maiden. It also mentions that stone knives will come out of it's eyes, mouth, and genital area. (note: Obsidian = Black) Hmm that sounds familiar. Maria was a desirable looking woman who once embraced by James later transformed into, well an obsidian butterfly maiden. She spit black butterflies out of her mouth, and had a tentacle like thing emerging from her genital area. Something else about Itzpapalotl. She was also the ruler over Tomoanchan a type of paradise. It is said that this is where the victims of infant mortality are kept, suckling on a tree that contains 400,000 nipples. The babies do this until they have enough strength to be rebirthed. Any thoughts on this? RE: Black Butterflies - Maria the Obsidian Butterfly Maiden (Spoilers) - sassy6976574 - 04-01-2024 I absolutely think you're a walking encyclopedia (teasing)
RE: Black Butterflies - Maria the Obsidian Butterfly Maiden (Spoilers) - =AoD= Captain - 04-01-2024 I do have a thought inspired by that tidbit. I think we are looking to closely at the rituals of the Cult in all our theories and such. Too much importance placed on the actual acts. Suggesting a deity tie to Maria seemingly cracks the door a bit on the SH universe. The demon/demigod/god behind Silent Hill is going to be a lot older than any of the human attached rituals and names.. These sorts of beings are typically ancient. It wants worship, they all do. How that worship is obtained is not important. The same creature now being called god and having the hierarchy of other entities in the religion such as Valtiel, etc has more than likely existed at some ancient time elsewhere, with other people, whose worship it obtained with a completely different set of rules. A different religion, different name, and totally different mythos. For whatever reason things went sour and our demon finds a new home with new chumps to do its bidding. What we are seeing isn't perhaps different end/boss creatures at all, but our same now nameless entity working every angle to be fully released, using the emotional states of different people (each protagonist) to attempt the fulfillment of some master plan. This is not unreasonable, many instances of a god or demon who has different skill sets and appearances depending on some outside condition can be found throughout literature. Vary the condition and you get your pre-ordered deity with different options. The SH Cult and its practices are simply the latest fresh coat of paint over the truth. RE: Black Butterflies - Maria the Obsidian Butterfly Maiden (Spoilers) - Lobsel_Vith - 04-01-2024 While I often agree with you Captain there's a bit of an error in your post. You mention that we're looking too closely at the actions of the cult for our theories; however I never mentioned anything about the cult in the post above. So how can I be looking to closely into the cult's actions if I didn't mention the cult in the initial post? It's pretty much common knowledge that a reoccurring theme in Silent Hill is rebirth and the initial post points it out again. RE: Black Butterflies - Maria the Obsidian Butterfly Maiden (Spoilers) - =AoD= Captain - 04-02-2024 I was diverging a bit, your thought led me to mine along an odd path, sorry, I agree with what you said. |
