Apparently (though I've never tried this) if you walk to the end of the road past the historical society in SH2 you find a bowling ball. Since I haven't done this yet I don't know whether you can pick it up and no one who has supposedly seen the bowling ball can remember.
I've tried looking for info on this on numerous walkthroughs, etc, but haven't turned up anything.
If anyone knows what the purpose is of the bowling ball/whether you can pick it up, that would be great.

The Great Pyramid Head Debate

There is quite a debate about whether Pyramid Head is a manifestation of James' guilt or if other people within Silent Hill can see him, which leads many to tend to believe that Pyramid Head is not a manifestation.

What we do know:

James visited the Historical Society during his first trip to Silent Hill. Within there there is a painting depicting the executioners during the time Silent Hill was a prison camp. The executioners wore the same outfit as Pyramid Head.

Who has seen Pyramid Head:

James - Obviously, as James is the one who has to fight him.

Maria - As a (true) manifestation of James' psyche, she is attuned to all that James can see.

Angela - No evidence that she has seen Pyramid Head. Nonetheless I don't think this can be ruled out as she does see some monsters, such as Abstract Daddy. She also warns James within the cemetery that the town is not safe. While this is from her own experience and most likely set of monsters, if she is seeing monsters then most likely she could see Pyramid Head if she wanted to.

Laura - She doesn't see anything but an empty town with a few people running around.

Eddie - He might see something, but he would most likely see Pyramid Head as a friend. Eddie's trip into madness is quick and severe and has affected his mentality. After the bowling alley the next time we see Eddie is, if I remember correctly, after the Prison right before the lake. If Eddie had to take the same route as James to get to the warehouse area, then Eddie would have had to walk by/around/right above Pyramid Head in the circular basement where James picks up the Great Knife. Pyramid Head could have appeared as a friend to Eddie so that Eddie would face James and feed the guilt in James for killing another person.

Mary - She is dead. If she sees anything it is from her grave.

Those are my thoughts on it. I think Pyramid Head truly is not a manifestation of James' psyche, but was his antagonist due to his prior knowledge of the town's history. What better way to punish yourself for murder then to have an executioner following you around?

Spoilers for SH2 lurk here.

There's been alot of questions about the black butterflies in the end of Silent Hill 2, and this is what I found out.

According to the Native people of Aztec there was a goddess known as Itzpapalotl. According to the myth she's a beautiful/desirable looking woman, but that one should be careful because once embraced she will turn into the Obsidian Butterfly Maiden. It also mentions that stone knives will come out of it's eyes, mouth, and genital area.

(note: Obsidian = Black)

Hmm that sounds familiar.

Maria was a desirable looking woman who once embraced by James later transformed into, well an obsidian butterfly maiden. She spit black butterflies out of her mouth, and had a tentacle like thing emerging from her genital area.

Something else about Itzpapalotl. She was also the ruler over Tomoanchan a type of paradise. It is said that this is where the victims of infant mortality are kept, suckling on a tree that contains 400,000 nipples. The babies do this until they have enough strength to be rebirthed.

Any thoughts on this?

After my PS2 had started ruining discs and Sony so generously fixed it for free and sent me a check for all of the games it ruined, I picked up the Greatest Hits V.2 to replace my original copy.

I was very happy to see the Maria Scenario but I wish there had been more. I was really looking forward to seeing what happened to her during the times she was separated from James (hospital, whole time from stabbing death until Pyramid Heads) but it wasn't there.

What was there was interesting enough and gave a little bit more insight into how Maria "evolved" into the character we know.

Do you think Konami should and/or should have explore/d this further?

Also if I can add, ON Silent Hill 3 for PC I cannot get the extra scenes like with the toilet in the women's restroom. Do i need to have Silent Hill 2 for pc too?
Now I know what your already thinking- its a Patient demon right? Well when you shoot at it, it makes noises that sound almost human- kind of disturbing. I believe this occurs in the southern cell block (not the first cell block you go through at the start, the second). Now what I want to know is who exactly you guys think that man was? It may not have any significance, I mean it could have just been put in there to scare the player a bit more but its just interesting to me. Thoughts?

An on-line friend of mine got this from another friend who got it from... you get the idea... Well, whoever it was, they somehow managed to contact Guy Cihi (James Sunderland's action/voice) and shared the two e-mails he/she got from him. He sounds really nice.

First e-mail

Hi Scott,
Yes, I am the same Guy Cihi. I played James Sunderland in Silent Hill II. Those are my body movements, that's my voice, and the character looks like me, too. So you liked my performance? Thank you! I gave it my best! Are you familiar with how motion capture games like SH2 are made? The most difficult parts were the falls and wipe outs - it hurt for weeks after I taping those. I've received email, over the years, from people on five continents. (My wife always laughs when I tell her, but it makes me feel good to know you liked my performance.) Where are you writing from?

I suppose there are some stories to tell. Remember Eddie? Of course you do, you're a fan, right? A guy named Dave Schaufele played Eddie. We met on the set. I've lost touch with everyone except for Dave. Both of us live in Tokyo. We see each other a couple of times each month. Remember Maria/Mary? Whoa, what a piece of work she is. I hear she moved to Hawaii. Good riddance.

Let me know if you have specific questions and tell me a little more about yourself so I'll know better how to respond.

All the Best, Guy

PS: How did you get my Harvard Alum email address?

Second e-mail

Hi Scott,

The SH2 story and characters were created entirely by a Japanese writer. In other words the writer’s cultural reality demanded that the result be something alien – something non-native. If you saw Final Fantasy, the movie, you’ll know what I mean. A native-born Japanese can’t think like an American. They sure as hell can’t write like one. No disrespect to my friends, wife and kids. That’s just the way it is.

You said that, “most game actors are voice actors.”

My understanding is that early motion-capture games used Japanese body talent with US voice-overs, but that the body language was bizarre. Next came motion-capture studios in Hawaii and LA using US body talent, but the writers and directors in Tokyo felt too far from the action.

For SH2, Konami pulled out the stops and put up the budget for a Tokyo-based motion-capture using foreign talent under Japanese direction. The directors were very precise about the motion-capture sessions they supervised. The character James is a Japanese writer’s concept of an American, being performed by a US action/voice talent (me), working under the direction of a non-English speaking Japanese director.

They chose me over 50 others because, they said, “you best fit our concept of James.” I acted the part the way they wanted it. I enjoyed the experience. It was 1999. I had just sold an educational software company I co-founded in 1985. I was about to leave Tokyo to cool my jets on our farm outside Florence. My 12 year-old asked me to take her to the audition for the child’s part (I’ve forgotten that character’s name). I was waiting for her when a Japanese director-type-guy walked by. Dressed all in black with a cigarette dangling and bags under his eyes - the whole nine yards. I asked him if I could read for the part. I don’t know why - the urge just hit me. There were three guys on the panel - all in various shades of black - none spoke English. They asked about my experience. I told them I took acting at college. I read. I thought it went well.

A few months passed. Didn’t hear anything. My daughter and I forgot about it. Out of the blue, I got an email. It had all started with my daughter. Since she didn’t get a part, I told her if she wanted me to, I’d blow it off. She said, “Go for it!”

We timed our family trips between Florence and Tokyo to coincide with motion-capture sessions. The directors had no idea about my financial situation. They told me later they thought I was an out of work English teacher. Actually, the SH2 money was pretty good. Except for the stunt falls, it was easy enough. My wife said, “You’ve got something to fall back on if your venture capital business doesn’t work out....”

You wrote, “Most people at SH fan sites can't stand James and don't like your acting”

Ouch, I’m glad they don’t send me email. But it’s like you said, the director saw James as an ordinary guy - a very confused ordinary guy - and definitely not a hero. Snappy lines? The original script was like a tortured derivative of English. It was a real challenge for the actors to twist it into semi-natural dialog. Lot’s of back and forth with the directors. They were good guys. They listened to our suggestions. But in they end, they made the call and got what they wanted from us.

You wrote, “Most actors don't get to see the final game or learn anything about it...they go in the booth, record, go home, get check, the end.”

SH2 was much more than visits to a recording studio. Every scene was acted out live before video cameras and motion-capture gear that records wire-form figures upon which artists could later render graphic skins. Actors memorized their lines, rehearsed, and performed countless re-takes. We laughed, wept, argued, fell-down, whatever. It was like making a film except we didn’t need special costumes and the sets were cardboard boxes placed there to create proper spatial relationships. When a player moves James between strands of barbed wire or over an obstacle he is actually watching me climbing between stings or over cardboard boxes on the motion-capture set.

As much as I know about how SH2 was made, I’d be lying if I said I’d spent much time playing it. I don’t even have a PlayStation.

Rest assured, though, that’s my body and soul in that performance.

All the best,
I spent so much time just using different weapons to kill her. My favorite place is in the hospital nurse's lounge. Perfect spot to take out the chainsaw and chop her head off.

K, so, if I understood right...Pyramid Head is supposed to be the symbolism that represents James's subconscious wish to be punished for what he did to his wife, right?

But, we learn that Pyramid Head, or the costume it has anyway, is actually what executioners back in the older days of Silent Hill looked like. So of course it's fitting that it would be him to punish James.

But what I don't get is, Silent Hill is different depending on who goes in the town and how messed up they are in the head, so to speak.

So how come James has Pyramid Head chasing him around to punish him, when he didn't know who or what it was before he went over to the Silent Hill Historical place?
I mean, Angela just sees her dad when James sees monsters, right? But she already knew who it was, since she's always lived there, and with her dad.
So even though James doesn't come from SH, and has only been there on vacation before, why does he see him?

I guess it doesn't really matter, I mean something or someone has to punish James, but shouldn't it have been something he knew about?

And another question..this particular PH, because there are plenty, well two more anyways, is only nicknamed Pyramid Head. But does this manifestation have an actual name? Or is it just based off of the executioners from long ago?

They might have said so in the game.

I will probably suffer ass rippage for this but.....

You know how you get the In Water ending? James claims: "Now I know the real reason why I came here, what was I afraid of?". Know....most people would say "Well, since it's an alternate ending, how do you know it just wasn't a convenient line just for the ending?"

Well...notice how in all ending in almost every SH game, they show some truth to it? Like without saving Cybil with the Koolaid, you wouldn't have known Cheryl was adopted and the Mark of Samael was actually the Seal of Metraton. Also, without killing Incubator, the player also wouldn't have known Incubator was a vision of God.

So why not in SH2? I'm not saying James goes through with it but that was his original reason. Facts we find out from each ending are...

Maria: James does have subconscious feelings for Maria and we also find out that Maria has the same disease as Mary.

Rebirth: James has knowledge of SH's Ancient Gods.

In Water: James's real reason he came to SH was to end his life.

Leave: James has a subconscious hatred for Mary and wanted to move on with his life.

Dog: Everything was the work of the Dog all along...

UFO: .....?

SO yea...I think it's apparent James's real reason he came to Silent Hill was to end his life but in all the other endings he either forgets about it or finds a new reason to live.

There's been a lot of debate over the official ending of Silent Hill 2. Most say it's the In Water ending because in SH4 Henry makes a comment that Frank Sunderland's son (James) and daughter in-law disappeared and never returned. However it's doubtful that James would have gone back to his hometown no matter what the ending might have been, so that brings this up.

What if all the endings are correct? Hear me out on this, first of all it's been said that no matter which ending you get James wouldn't go back home. So right there we really shouldn't use the SH4 quote as a factor of any the endings.

To me the endings represent how the player wants James to feel about Mary, and himself. If one goes for the In Water ending they have to take a lot of damage, examine Angela's knife constantly, look at Mary's picture, listen to the whole conversation in the hallway in order for James to go careening into the lake with Mary's body in the trunk.

If one wants the Maria ending then they must have James wait hand and foot on Maria, follow Maria, stay with Maria, protect Maria, become so obsessed with Maria that Mary pretty much becomes an afterthought. In fact this is the only normal ending in which James doesn't ask for Mary's forgiveness after killing Mary. The reason for this is because James has just finished killing the Mary demon. Him and Maria leave with Maria coughing, and James telling her she should get that cough checked out.

If one wants the Leave ending to be true, then they have to act as Laura does. Search for Mary with the quest to live through this. They have to put Maria as an afterthought, talking to her and protecting her only when necessary. When the Maria demon is killed James meets Mary in what I can only say is a celestial area, in which James is asking for Mary's forgiveness for his sin towards her. When he gets the letter, he leaves Silent Hill with Laura following him.

Those are the normal endings, these are three also where automatically the player decides what motive James will have. Examples

In Water - James is depressed over the death of his wife, and suicidal. He shows this by constantly getting injured, rarely taking his medications to heal himself, placing Maria as an afterthought, looking at everything that reminds him of Mary.

Maria - James is befuddled at the idea of Mary sending him a letter from Silent Hill. He drives to the town, keeping his health in check. When he meets Maria he becomes so obsessed with the idea that she's Mary that he waits on her hand and foot. When he finds out he killed his wife, it doesn't matter much, because he has another Mary right there, why should he feel guilty for killing the sick Mary.

Leave - James is hurt over the death of his wife, but wants answers to why he's being summoned to the town. He places Mary first and foremost in his mind, does not worship Maria, and follows Laura's example. When he finds out the truth about what he did, he comes to terms with what he did. Mary forgives him, and he forgives himself, he leaves.

Then we have the hidden endings, but since I have never played the greatest hits version I'll stick with the rebirth ending and the dog ending. In order to get either of these endings it requires James to go through Silent Hill again and again. In both of the endings James has collect items, even for the dog ending, James must have gotten the rebirth ending.

Unlike the normal endings the motivation and emotions that the players give James has no effect on the hidden endings. As long as James has the four or one necessary item for the endings, he will get them no matter what. All that is required to get these endings is to have James acquire certain items. If one wishes to make James so obsessed with Mary that he wants her back, have him collect the items for the rebirth. If the player wants does not wish to see James, Maria, and Angela dying all they have to do is pick up a dog key, and open an observation room, activating the dog ending. A joke ending to most, but to some it's the ending where everyone (except Eddy) is being forgiven.

Ultimately it's up to the player to decide which ending will be the true one.
