What is Pyramid Head?

I was recently talking about Silent Hill to a friend who doesn't play it, and he asked me "What is that Pyramid Head thing anyway?" Now, I'm not really clear on this myself, so I sent him a link to a picture and told him a couple of theories I'd had.

Just for giggles, I asked ChatGPT about it. Some of the results I got were (in no particular order):

"pyramid head is an embodiment of pain and suffering"

"pyramid head is just the judge james is subconsciously looking to punish him for his sin"

"pyramid head is a minion of samael who wanders around tormenting the sinners and having their own fun killing and tormenting things"

and my personal favourite:

"pyramid head is being used for studding on doors".

So, what do you think of our red-helmeted friend? Please tell me your theories!

He is the embodiement of James' sexuality and guilt. He's James with all the positive bits removed.

I see Pyramid Head as a sort of angel. Remember angels don't have to be cuddle fluff things, the only thing they have to do is to deliver a message, which is something that Pyramid Head does.

I believe Pyramid Head IS James. I guess James, deep inside, wants to punish himself for sins - the town 'created' PH, who is James, to punish James...

Yeah, thats what I always thought PH was. In my opinion he represents the crueler, and more criminal side of James, and Silent Hill creates him to punish James for his sins. Its almost like we had two different pieces of James walking around Silent Hill. Like when James entered Silent Hill the town broke off that piece of his personality and manifested it into Pyramid Head. We also never really see James' more crueler side in the game- perhaps its not there anymore. It seems to have been replaced by feelings of guilt and depression. It may be a bit far-fetched but thats how I feel.

It's also been theorized that Maria is also Pyramid Head, without the helmet and with boobs.
