Valtiel is the protector of God. God in this case is Alessa/Heather.
It is his job to make sure that God doesn't die. Within certain spots of the game where Heather dies, Valtiel will come and drag her off. This is supposed to reflect him bringing her back to life.
It is very deep and I will post it from Lost Memories soon enough. Right now, just know that he is the one who keeps Heather alive to birth the God.
(Take a close look at where he appears outside of the death scenes...)
