Yes, but imagine this. You have an imaginary friend. In an attempt to make them more real, you give them a background. You give them memories. It's not surprising that some of James' memories of Mary would overlap with his creation of Maria. James didn't even remember Mary being in a hospital in Silent Hill. Isn't it possible that Mary would've written him letters about Laura? It's not surprising to think that in an attempt to give Maria a personality, subconciously, he would attach some of Mary's memories to her. Maria was basically what James wanted Mary to be anyway.
