The general understanding is that the Good ending is the "true" ending of Silent Hill. One of the staples of the Silent Hill games is an ending that, while it is complete, is far from a "and they lived happily ever after" ending. For example: with Silent Hill 2, Water (I think that is what it is called) is generally accepted to be the right ending. James' father (I can't remember his name, but I want to say Ralph) in SH4 says somewhere that his son disappeared in Silent Hill. And it just seems to fit the game better that James would kill himself to atone for his sins and to be with Mary. Silent Hill 3: I find it hard to believe everything is okay in the end. I think Heather killing Douglas fits much better.
