Okay, stupid question about Alessa, but.
#2
No, she didn't die there. When she is all incapacitated and burned her soul is split up, the core of her being including memories, knowledge, etc stays in Alessa while a free-roaming astral projection is composed of borrowed bits of Alessa and thus we get Cheryl. When Cheryl joins back with Alessa there probably isn't a body left over or anything, her physical form would have just dissipated while the mind and any knowledge/memories including the soul would return to Alessa.

The rest involves going into theories, though most are quite sound and can be read up on or inquired about here on the forum. Cheryl may have acted as a "remote" for Alessa, being able to experience and live through the projection though at probably a subconscious level for Cheryl or perhaps both of them. Cheryl may have been the confined Alessa's window to the world. Then again they might have been completely unaware of one another until the time came to journey back to SH.

There are others here who are far better versed on Alessa than I, so a much better answer is forthcoming I am sure.
