It was a new game I had heard about way back in '96. It was called Resident Evil, and upon hearing of it, I was intrigued. So I decided to give this game a whirl. It scared me shitless, and got me hooked at the same time. The first time I saw the Hunter, I was whimpering, and nearly leapt out of my skin when, with one quick swipe, it cleanly took my head off. That had me reeled in, hook, line, and sinker.
What was your first survival horror game?

What do you see beyond the mirror?
A mirror to your soul.. or something more? You know what it is, yet you could not say it out. Trapped, you could only look helplessly beyond...

The first horror game I ever played was some Dracula game on PS1. I don't even remember the full name of the game, I just remember being super scared. I didn't even know how to play the game properly because I was a kid then. The first horror game that stuck with me is 7 Days to Die.

I watched some gameplay footage on Youtube because I was curious and it looks really interesting, like an old-school Myst-style point-and-click game.

I think for me it was the SNES port of Doom back in around 1996 or 1997. I rented it from a local video store but my dumb little kid brain couldn't figure out how to open any doors (and I'm pretty sure I tried pressing every button numerous times so I'm not sure what happened there). But even though I was barely able to play any of it, the game just fascinated me and I started saving up so I could buy the game, which I did, and not only did I figure out how to open doors, I actually ended up beating it. Pretty sure I had to leave my Super Nintendo on for a couple of months straight just to finish it.
If Doom doesn't count, my first traditional survival horror game was Alone in the Dark, which I probably picked up around 1998 or so. I really really wanted to play Resident Evil at the time but I didn't have a PS1, which at the time was still pretty expensive. But I found a 3DO for $40 at a game store my mom would take me to and picked it up, along with this Alone in the Dark game which I had never heard of before but looked a lot like Resident Evil and I think it only cost me $10 complete. I was eventually able to play it all the way to the end and I was hooked on the genre ever since. I think I might have played Splatterhouse 3 on the Sega Genesis before or around the time as well if you count that as survival horror, which I do. There was also some weird Super Famicom game supposedly called "Ghost" that I bought on eBay back then because the blurry pictures of the back of the box looked like Resident Evil. Spoiler alert, it was nothing like Resident Evil, just some visual novel that I couldn't even play because it was all in Japanese. Oh well... |
