Endings...
#1
It's been brought up that, unlike all the other Silent Hill games, 3 has an underwhelming number of ending. SH1 had 5, SH2 had I believe 6, and SH4 had 4. SH3 had a total of 3, and that's WITH one of them being the fun albiet completely ridiculous UFO ending.

If you take the UFO ending to be the correct ending of SH3, that means you basically take the UFO ending to be the correct ending for ALL the SH games. Not that you couldn't make a case out of it, but I haven't heard anyone make an interesting or semi-coherent case out of it since the first game.

That leaves two endings left. Someone stated that there are few happy endings in SH; even the apparent good ending from the first game was only a brief respite from the town for Harry and Heather. Despite all our best efforts (I played that first game some fifteen times, those bastards), Harry was dead. SH is not a fan of good triumphing over evil.

The "Heather" ending is the easiest to get, and basically the first one you get everytime through. In it, Heather sneaks up on Douglas, threatens to kill him (which is just the kind of situation you want to f*** around in), and then they leave together, presumably as SH turns back to normal.

Does this ending strike anyone else as somewhat, I don't know...strange? I've heard us youth are supposed to have tremendous recovery powers from traumatic events or whatever, but Heather's kind of chipper seems to be not quite the strong front it should, but really more of a genuine sense of happiness.

I bring that up to bring this up. At the end of the "Possessed" ending, the only other ending in this game, Heather becomes possessed much like Cybil from the first game, and kills Douglas.

And before either the Heather or Possessed ending, right after killing the final boss and Heather's emotional breakdown over her father and everything else, she walks away but pauses for a second, sensing something, and looks behind her. And sees...

We don't know what the hell she sees. But, given the minimum number of endings, several other elements from the game, and the fact that no matter which ending you get, Heather always sees SOMETHING right before the end, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Heather is possessed NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO. That's the true ending, and something which will have to come up in a future game. If you get "Heather", she's faking it and trying to act human, and if you get "Possessed", the true demon comes out and she kills Douglas basically out of spite.

I intend to try to prove this in a new thread later. I just had to get that out there because it's been driving me crazy. I don't think there's any other answer, and if you guys disagree, let me know why so I can try to prepare a defense.

It's a good theory, and you don't have to worry about us flipping out at you. Nothing is true in Silent Hill unless Team Silent says it is, and they say very little to us fans> So much is speculation. We won't get on your case for doing your duty!

I never thought about the fact that Heather seems very chipper in the Heather ending. I just took the happy mood of the scene to mean "THIS ISN'T THE REAL ENDING" and so I figured Possessed was the real one. You make a good point, however, and I find it interesting that Heather might be a villain in the future..

But in this particular case, I'm actually looking to see if anyone else DOES see any problems with the theory, whether or not they believe it. Are there any unanswered questions that would need to be examined, any holes that would need to be patched, that sort of thing.

Myself, I'm stoked to see if Heather becomes a villian in the series. It would be a great (i.e. awful) twist and few people would see it coming. That's what makes it so much fun.
