Any good survival horror games on the Dreamcast?
Posted by: thrash242 - 02-23-2024, 05:09 AM - Forum: Survival Horror Forum - Replies (3)

So I recently found a Dreamcast for cheap at a thrift store (didn't come with any games unfortunately) and I was wondering if there were any good horror games for it?

Are there any games for it that are similar to Silent Hill?

Okay, stupid question about Alessa, but.

Before she merged with Cheryl and made Heather, so striclty in the world of the first game. Was she dead? were we seeing a projection of her throughout the game? I assume that, but Im not really sure. Dx

Bc we never really see any mention of a death. Just that she's stationary and hella burnt within the hospital. Did she die there? X_X Im so confused. ;_;

  Dahlia's "original" plan for Alessa?
Posted by: Conjurer - 02-22-2024, 11:30 PM - Forum: Silent Hill 1 - Replies (2)

Dahlia: Come, Come along !

Alessa: No. No I don't want to.
Dahlia: Do what mommy tells you now. I just want you to lend me a teeny bit of your power, that's all.
Alessa: No! I don't want to do it.
Dahlia: It would make everyone happy, and it's for your own good to.
Alessa: Oh, but mommy I just want to be with you. Just the two of us, please understand.
Dahlia: I see. Maybe mommy has been wrong.
Alessa: Mommy ?
Dahlia: Why didn't I see this before? There's no reason to wait. Herein lies the mother's womb, containing the power to create life. I could have done it all myself !
Alessa: Mommy ?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Ahem* From what I can gather from this, Dahlia wanted to use Alessa for another purpose besides using her as a Holy Women for God and we all know she was being raised as a priestess. What teeny bit of power was she going to use? And why?

The Official Silent Hill 2 Ending
Posted by: Lobsel_Vith - 02-22-2024, 08:06 AM - Forum: Silent Hill 2 - Replies (13)

There's been a lot of debate over the official ending of Silent Hill 2. Most say it's the In Water ending because in SH4 Henry makes a comment that Frank Sunderland's son (James) and daughter in-law disappeared and never returned. However it's doubtful that James would have gone back to his hometown no matter what the ending might have been, so that brings this up.

What if all the endings are correct? Hear me out on this, first of all it's been said that no matter which ending you get James wouldn't go back home. So right there we really shouldn't use the SH4 quote as a factor of any the endings.

To me the endings represent how the player wants James to feel about Mary, and himself. If one goes for the In Water ending they have to take a lot of damage, examine Angela's knife constantly, look at Mary's picture, listen to the whole conversation in the hallway in order for James to go careening into the lake with Mary's body in the trunk.

If one wants the Maria ending then they must have James wait hand and foot on Maria, follow Maria, stay with Maria, protect Maria, become so obsessed with Maria that Mary pretty much becomes an afterthought. In fact this is the only normal ending in which James doesn't ask for Mary's forgiveness after killing Mary. The reason for this is because James has just finished killing the Mary demon. Him and Maria leave with Maria coughing, and James telling her she should get that cough checked out.

If one wants the Leave ending to be true, then they have to act as Laura does. Search for Mary with the quest to live through this. They have to put Maria as an afterthought, talking to her and protecting her only when necessary. When the Maria demon is killed James meets Mary in what I can only say is a celestial area, in which James is asking for Mary's forgiveness for his sin towards her. When he gets the letter, he leaves Silent Hill with Laura following him.

Those are the normal endings, these are three also where automatically the player decides what motive James will have. Examples

In Water - James is depressed over the death of his wife, and suicidal. He shows this by constantly getting injured, rarely taking his medications to heal himself, placing Maria as an afterthought, looking at everything that reminds him of Mary.

Maria - James is befuddled at the idea of Mary sending him a letter from Silent Hill. He drives to the town, keeping his health in check. When he meets Maria he becomes so obsessed with the idea that she's Mary that he waits on her hand and foot. When he finds out he killed his wife, it doesn't matter much, because he has another Mary right there, why should he feel guilty for killing the sick Mary.

Leave - James is hurt over the death of his wife, but wants answers to why he's being summoned to the town. He places Mary first and foremost in his mind, does not worship Maria, and follows Laura's example. When he finds out the truth about what he did, he comes to terms with what he did. Mary forgives him, and he forgives himself, he leaves.

Then we have the hidden endings, but since I have never played the greatest hits version I'll stick with the rebirth ending and the dog ending. In order to get either of these endings it requires James to go through Silent Hill again and again. In both of the endings James has collect items, even for the dog ending, James must have gotten the rebirth ending.

Unlike the normal endings the motivation and emotions that the players give James has no effect on the hidden endings. As long as James has the four or one necessary item for the endings, he will get them no matter what. All that is required to get these endings is to have James acquire certain items. If one wishes to make James so obsessed with Mary that he wants her back, have him collect the items for the rebirth. If the player wants does not wish to see James, Maria, and Angela dying all they have to do is pick up a dog key, and open an observation room, activating the dog ending. A joke ending to most, but to some it's the ending where everyone (except Eddy) is being forgiven.

Ultimately it's up to the player to decide which ending will be the true one.

  Pizza...
Posted by: Harley Quinn - 02-22-2024, 07:12 AM - Forum: Silent Hill 2 - Replies (6)

So, I've finally gotten my boyfriend to give SH a chance. He's starting with 2.
But what he wants to know is why there's an apartment building full of pop-tart-less kitchens, but somehow Eddie finds a pizza.

I suggested it was subconscious. James was all "DAMN that's one fat bastard, all the slob needs is a pizza." and LO!

  Some really random questions

Silent Hill 2: Obscure Questions

1. Can you hit any other of Toluca Lake's shores while in the row board? Or Find anything? Or at least see any of the shore? Other than the Hotel or course. (1m 47s best time btw Smile )

2. Why do the boat ropes in Rosewater Park stretch out taunt as if something is on them pulling on them?

3. Does anyone know the backstory behind the Swamp/Stone monument on Lindsey street a few houses down from where you get the wrench and letter? It is in the median between the sidewalk and street and talks about this whole land being a Blood Swamp, cursed or something.

4. I spent 5 hours wandering around all the streets and found 10 times the supplies listed in any walkthrough or on an map on the internet, does anyone want to know where it all is?

5. Are there any other references to "those who died of illness, lying beneath the lake"(monument is rosewater park) and the "sinking ferry boat story" in any of the other SH games? And what are those stories all about. I know that the statue with the key buried under it is the same Jennifer Carrol as St. Jen pictured in the Chapel in SH3. Also, what about the monument in the park about the guy on a horse and some hero stuff?

6. The island shown on the main lake map (SE of the hotel, closer to N shore than S) is the island James goes to in REBIRTH, right?

7. Is there a full map anywhere put together by someone that shows ALL the areas from all the game and how they are geographically related? I want a big picture view. If not, I will start that project immediately.

AND: Did you know there is a sign on the outside of the prison (you can see it after beating Eddie from the save spot on the barrel on the pier going towards the boat) that says "People aiding or concealing escaping prisoners are subject to persecution"?

Thanks for you time, sorry for the questions.
Thanks for you time, sorry for the questions.

Also, where is the part of Toluca lake in SH4 where you overlook the lake on the map from SH2, anyone take a guess?

And is the Neely's bar window note about the hole any relation to SH4?

The meaning of the opening movie?
Posted by: Spider - 02-22-2024, 03:36 AM - Forum: Silent Hill 1 - Replies (4)

Potential spoilers ahead:

After completing the game, the opening movie changes to show Harry and Cybil finding Cheryl/Alessa/Heather instead of Harry and Rose.

From what I can remember, there isn't really an explanation for this. We never hear from Cybil again within the games.

Just a trick played on the gamers, or do you think there is something more there?

The Great Laura Debate! Who really is Laura from Silent Hill 2?
Posted by: shootzombies - 02-22-2024, 03:18 AM - Forum: Silent Hill 2 - Replies (22)

Is she real or is she there to prove something to James, like Maria is? I have recently been playing Silent Hill 2 over again, and I became interested in Laura again. In my opinion Laura represents the innocent side of Mary that James despised, and Maria represented the more wild sexual side that James always wanted. In the ending "leave" from SH2 I think that Laura was able to stay with James not in real life, but in his mind. We are seeing things from James' eyes and to him, Laura is walking beside him. I just think that in the end James has accepted the innocent side of Mary and to show his love for her he forgets about her other side- her wild side (Maria basically) and loves her for who she is. Which is why I believe that Laura is still with him, and Maria isn't, James has withdrawn that part of Mary from his memory and now loves her and doesn't care to much about the more "wild" side anymore.

I don't know, I just thought that I'd go on a rant about this because Laura's place in Silent Hill really interests me. Any thoughts?

  What is Pyramid Head?
Posted by: geeksicle - 02-21-2024, 11:54 PM - Forum: Survival Horror Forum - Replies (6)

I was recently talking about Silent Hill to a friend who doesn't play it, and he asked me "What is that Pyramid Head thing anyway?" Now, I'm not really clear on this myself, so I sent him a link to a picture and told him a couple of theories I'd had.

Just for giggles, I asked ChatGPT about it. Some of the results I got were (in no particular order):

"pyramid head is an embodiment of pain and suffering"

"pyramid head is just the judge james is subconsciously looking to punish him for his sin"

"pyramid head is a minion of samael who wanders around tormenting the sinners and having their own fun killing and tormenting things"

and my personal favourite:

"pyramid head is being used for studding on doors".

So, what do you think of our red-helmeted friend? Please tell me your theories!
